In addition to being a long-time major donor to the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), Seton Melvin is also involved with several well-known art and culture museums. Seton Melvin is affiliated with the Metropolitan Museum of Art director’s group and a supporter of the Guggenheim Museum in New York City.

Through September 2021, the Guggenheim will exhibit a collection of sculptures from the era of Abstract Expressionism. During the 1960s, a group of accomplished sculptors were influenced by the free-form techniques used by painters such as Jackson Pollock and integrated these concepts into their work. This resulted in experimental designs using modern materials and organic shapes.

The exhibition, titled “Knotted, Torn, Scattered: Sculpture after Abstract Expressionism,” features iconic artists such as Richard Serra, Maren Hassinger, and Robert Morris. Hassinger’s 1972 piece, Untitled, is created from rope and suspended from the ceiling in a draping, flowing fashion. Also featured is Richard Serra’s dynamic rubber sculpture Belts, created in 1967 after the artist’s return from Italy.
